Milk Crate Theatre Rehearsals

Through my journey of discovering the arts in Australia and immersing myself into the slipstream of expression using dramatic form, I was elated to discover a theatre company that tapped into my veins and connected on a subject matter that I find touches my soul through it’s sheer humanitarianism.

The Milk Crate Theatre are a practicing Sydney theatre based company that collaborate with people, who have either been homeless and or experienced social marginalisation. Their goal is “to create theatre that creates change”.

They truly are an inspirational troupe and I am a big fan of what they are achieving and have no qualms in promoting their work here. For me theatre has the potential to unlock many doors and is open to comment on so many of society’s core values. I would like to see how theatre can expand with the use of the multimedia environment and capitalise on the rise of social media to start promoting some core messages across the globe.

Here is a part 1 of a video uploaded on You Tube that gives an account from some of its performers.

About thegonzotrap

Like an illicit drug injected straight into a vein, drama and the creative arts grabbed hold of me from an early age. Whatever form it took on, I was hooked. This intoxication went straight to my brain, infusing every impulse with creative energy and injecting it with so much passion and vitality that it could lift me higher than anything that I could imagine. There are many forms that have inspired me over the years, leaving me hungry for more. Always something to whet my appetite. I have tried to harness this yearning. Always aspiring to seek out what truly invigorates my soul and for a while, this drive has laid dormant, but now, it has begun to resurrect itself. The only way to let any form of creativity to flourish is to observe it: Its' traits, its' habits, it's ebbs and flows. I have decided to create this blog in order to record and collate anything that may ignite the senses. Currently, I am training as a multiplatform producer. I aim to bring together the skills from the scholarship I have undertaken at Metro Screen with other qualities that I have attained over the years. Whether this is through acting, editing or production management, merging this with things that have inspired me thus far and hopefully beyond. My target is to bill myself as a Gonzo Multiplatform Producer. This blog will be my journey.

For me Milk Crate Theatre is exactly what theatre – and perhaps all art – should be. It opens our eyes to a different world, challenges us and forces us to engage with a performance. Thanks for sharing this Paul.

I couldn’t agree with your words more Alex. Theatre should be governed by the people, in order to establish a true connection with its audience and Theatre of the Oppressed is a medium that does this. If handled in the right way, as Milk Crate have done and still do, some wonderful things can start to happen and dare I say, society and its issues can be healed. All it takes is collaboration.
